The owner of a business in southeast Nebraska barely escaped from a fire last night with his life — and his shirt on fire.
Beatrice Rural Fire Chief Jim Engel says Shawn Vanlaningham was painting a vehicle at Van’s Waterproofing Company when a paint spraying machine caught fire.
“He tried to get as much equipment out as he could but the interior contents of the building started to come down on him, so he just escaped and called 911,” Chief Engel says. ” He had burns to his hands, a few to his back, his shirt was on fire when he left, so it was a close call for him.”
Vanlaningham was not seriously injured. Engel says the roof of the building eventually caved in from the fire and it’ll likely be a total loss. Damage may be in six figures.
Engel says he could see fire and smoke from about six miles away as he was heading to the scene. No firefighters were hurt.
