State Department of Correctional Services officials say a prison inmate serving a life sentence for murder at the Lincoln state prison has been found dead in his cell, likely from suicide.
59-year-old Michael Peterson just began serving his life sentence in late May on a first-degree murder charge from Buffalo County.
According to the Department of Correctional Services, Peterson was found unresponsive in his cell early this morning. Efforts to resuscitate Peterson, both by prison staff and Lincoln Fire and Rescue, proved unsuccessful. Peterson was pronounced dead about half an hour later.
The department says the cause of death has not been determined, but appears to be suicide. A grand jury will be empaneled to investigate the death.
