Authorities in Paulding County, Ohio say a small airplane piloted by 59-year-old Dr. Michael McCarty of Grand Island crashed in a field in Latty Township. Two passengers in the plane, 65-year-old Wayne Weiss and his wife, 62-year-old Rosalee Weiss, died in the crash.
Representatives from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been on the scene, attempting to determine what went wrong.
The Paulding County Progress reports the aircraft was a single-engine, four-seat Cirrus SR 22. It crashed around 6 o’clock the evening of the 6th near the intersection of Roads 50 and 137, northwest of Grover Hill.
The plane lost radar contact with the Toledo airport. The plane, which left from Grand Island, had made a stop in Iowa and was in route to Findlay, Ohio.
Witnesses reported seeing flames from the plane before the crash. They reported that when the plane crashed, it sounded like a bomb exploded.
The Paulding County Coroner identified the victims.
Family members reported McCarty was flying to New Jersey to visit his daughter. Wayne and Rosalee Weiss were on vacation.
