A United States airman who worked for Offutt Air Force Base has drowned in Lake Manawa across the state line in Iowa.
A search for the man began shortly after his companion, 36-year-old Master Sgt. Benjamin Ferguson, swam to shore Sunday after their boat capsized. The other man, whose name has not been released, also began to swim, but didn’t make it.
Emergency crews searched for his body Sunday until darkness ended the search. It resumed Monday when the body was recovered.
The Council Bluffs, Iowa Police Department reports the men had been attempting to navigate frozen patches on the lake when it flipped over.
Ferguson suffered extreme hypothermia. The water temperature at the time of the accident registered around 35 degrees, according to authorities.
Officials say they will wait until they have results from an autopsy before releasing the name of the drowning victim.
Both men worked at the weather agency for Offutt, which is located in Bellevue.
