Just in time for Christmas, the Nebraska Capitol has a Nativity scene on display.
The Omaha chapter of the Thomas More Society raised private funds to set up the Nativity in the first floor rotunda of the Capitol. The society says the Nativity will be on display through December 26th.
“The Nativity scene in the Rotunda represents constitutionally-protected free speech and expression of religious faith by private citizens in a traditional public forum,” said Tom Brejcha, Thomas More Society President and Chief Counsel said in a written statement. “The Government is neither censor nor endorser of such religious speech. In the Capitol Rotunda, where political rallies are routinely held during Government sessions, the Government is merely the gatekeeper upholding free speech.”
The Thomas More Society says Nativity scene was donated through the generosity of an anonymous donor and the American Nativity Scene Committee.
