Police advise to ring in the New Year with fireworks, not gunfire

December 30, 2014 By Karla James

fireworksMany Nebraskans will ring in the New Year with fireworks, but Omaha Police Public Information Officer Michael Pecha says celebratory gunfire remains a big problem in many areas.

Sadly, it can often have tragic results when innocent people are hit by the bullets and injured or killed. The reality is that any bullet discharged from a gun, even into the sky, must land at some location, and the risks are significant for injury or death.

Officer Pecha says discharging a firearm within the Omaha City Limits is not only illegal but potentially deadly and violators will be arrested.

Residents of Omaha and those visiting can shoot off fireworks.  They are allowed within the city limits until 11 pm on Tuesday and from 8 am New Year’s Eve through 1 am on New Year’s Day.  Officer Pecha says those violating those time restraints could face charges.
