As Nebraska remains in the grip of a bitter cold snap people head to the Open Door Mission in Omaha for a warm place to stay. CEO Candace Gregory says no one is turned away but that means they are running on low on a number of necessities.
Gregory says, “We are sleeping women and children on the floor on mats and it is drafty on the floor and we would like to give them more than one blanket.”
Along with blankets, Gregory says they are in need of pillows, hats and gloves.
Gregory says they are also in need of volunteers to help distribute those items to those truly in need. She says even a few volunteer hours can make a big difference.
Those wanting to help in the metro area can drop off items off at the mission near 21st and East Locust Street in Omaha or at their donation center in Elkhorn, 1620 North 203rd St. Those living outside the metro but would still like to help can make a donation online at opendoormission.org.
