The Omaha Fire Department will no longer transport trauma patients to CHI Creighton University Medical Center. The decision was made after the Department of Health and Human Services denied CHI Creighton a level on trauma center status for failing to meet four requirements.
Fire Chief Bernie Kanger says, “It is in the patient’s best interest because the state of Nebraska came in and determined that currently in the city limits of Omaha there is only level one trauma center that can treat adult patients.”
The Omaha Fire Department rotated days and transported trauma patients to CHI Creighton and Nebraska Medicine. Until further notice all trauma patients will be taken to Nebraska Medicine. The Omaha Fire Department will continue to transport patients with less serious injuries to CHI Creighton.
CHI Creighton is appealing the decision and officials there say the four issues of concern have been corrected.
