Matt Carlino’s three-pointer with 11.2 seconds left gave Marquette a 53-52 victory over visiting Creighton on Wednesday night in Milwaukee. Marquette improved to 10-6 (2-2 BIG EAST), while Creighton dropped to 9-9 (0-5 BIG EAST). It was the second straight heartbreaking loss for Creighton on a three-pointer in the closing seconds after Sterling Gibbs made a three-pointer with 2.2 seconds left in Seton Hall’s 68-67 win on Saturday.
In each game, Creighton had a chance to win, only to see their potential winning shot not drop. The Bluejays did little to make this easy on themselves. A first half scoring drought and hot shooting from MU which included six three-pointers contributed to MU’s 22-2 run that put the Golden Eagles up 26-12 in the first half. Creighton would answer with a 9-2 run in the final three minutes of the first half to draw within 28-21 at the break.
Isaiah Zierden gave Creighton a 47-44 lead with 3:03 to play, sinking a three-pointer from the corner, only to see MU answer with two free throws by Carlino with 2:36 to play. Creighton then pushed the lead to four on a Rick Kreklow three-pointer with 1:59 left. MU answered on Wilson’s driving lay-up, but CU returned the lead to four on a Will Artino spin move.
MU again got within two with 50.8 left on a Carlino jumper. CU turned the ball over and MU got the the ball with 21.6 left with Carlino hitting his game-winning three-pointer. The Jays had two attempts in the final seconds, but Artino’s five-footer rolled off the rim and a Kreklow tip-in also missed.
Creighton returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Providence at 6:31 pm.
