A tragic accident in north-central Omaha Wednesday evening sends a woman to a hospital. Police were called to 5116 Northwest Radial Highway to investigate a pedestrian – vehicle accident.
Police say 55 year old Joanne Smith was removing items from the trunk of her vehicle when she was hit by a another driver. The force of the crash caused both of Smith’s legs to be severed just above the knee. She was transported to the hospital in serious condition and immediately taken to surgery.
The driver of the vehicle is identified as 41 year old Lawanda Cook of Omaha. She gave a statement to investigators she was distracted when her cell phone fell to the floorboard and she was attempting to retrieve it when the crash happened.
The accident remains under investigation. Charges against Cook are pending.
