The annual ride is set for the third week in June, beginning and ending in the central Nebraska town of Ravenna.
Susan Rodenburg is the co-founder of the five-day ride and explains how it got started in 1988.
“My husband, Rich, and I used to own a bicycle store and we enjoy cycling ourselves and have done several different tours in different parts of the country,” Rodenburg says. “About 28 years ago, we decided, let’s do one of our own here in Nebraska.”
The ride started out small and has grown every year. The route is changed up each time. This summer, about 250 bicycle riders are expected to tackle what will be a 292-mile trek.
Typically, Rodenburg says they have riders from all over Nebraska and from as many as 18 other states.
Rodenburg says, “We have quite a community that we’ve built up over the years of folks who’ve done the tour the last 28 years at one time or another.”
This year’s route begins in Ravenna on June 17th with overnight stops planned in St.Paul, Ord, Burwell and Broken Bow, returning to Ravenna on June 22nd. Learn more at: www.TourdeNebraska.com.
