Unadilla Bill saw his shadow on Groundhog’s Day and according to legend that means six more weeks of winter. Bob Brandt is the director of Unadilla’s Central Groundhog Committee and says Bill, their stuffed groundhog, made that prediction at 7:35 this morning.
Brandt says Unadilla became the state’s Groundhog Day capitol back in 1988 by the authority of then Lt. Governor Bill Nichol, Unadilla Bill’s namesake. Only a handful of people attended this morning’s ceremony and breakfast because of the weekend snowstorm. Brandt says most of the roads leading into Unadilla are still blocked but the weather should be perfect for their annual festival on Saturday, February 7th.
There are a number of events and Brandt urges all Nebraskans make the trip to Unadilla for the festival. The Groundhog Day parade starts at 1 pm and crowning of the queen and king is at 2 pm. Along with other events throughout the day a big hit is their annual canned SPAM cooking contest. Brandt says SPAM is a perfect fit for the festival because it is “ground hog”.
