An Omaha company recently fell victim to an international scam and is out more than $17-million. A Scoular Company employee thought he was responding to an email sent by the CEO instructing him to send the money to a bank in China. President and CEO of the Better Business Bureau – Nebraska Jim Hegarty says this is proof of just how sophisticated these scammers are.
Hegarty says, “How can somebody fall for that scheme? How can people fall for the grandparent scheme or why would people send money to these scammers thinking they have won a prize? Until you have been on the receiving end of these and interacted with these individuals you don’t understand the level of professionalism they have. It is easy to be judgmental but we need to remember that Scoular is the victim here and the individual that sent the money was victimized.”
Hegarty says the same scammers recently targeted the BBB and sent thousands of emails pretending to be from his organization to businesses wanting company information.
