The recent snow is a welcome sight for those waiting to break in a new sled. Nebraska Game and Parks Commission spokesman Greg Wagner says one of the best areas in the eastern part of the state for winter fun is Mahoney State Park near Ashland.
Wagner says they have two snow 100 yard snow runs and a 50 foot run for smaller children. Sledding is allowed from sunrise to 10 pm and the runs are lighted. Wagner says snowboards and sleds with metal runners are not allowed.
Game and Parks also remind Nebraskans that conditions remain unsafe for ice fishing. Wagner says there is a lot of snow cover over unstable ice so it is best not to take a risk. For those who can’t resist, Wagner says head to Antelope County to the East Branch of Verdigre Creek. He says this is a spring fed creek with 48 to 50-degree water and full of rainbow and brown trout.
