The former Elm Creek Village Clerk is scheduled to go on trial in Buffalo County, charged with embezzling more than $10,000 from the city.
Forty-nine-year-old Wendy Stephens appeared in Buffalo County Court Tuesday for a preliminary hearing, at which time she waived her right to a speedy trial. The case will now be bound over to Buffalo County District Court for trial.
Stephens is charged with one count of theft totaling more than $1,500, a class III felony. According to court records, Stephens allegedly altered six checks totaling more than $1,000 each while she was employed as Village Clerk of Elm Creek with the checks having a combined total of $10,518.
The altered checks were discovered during a recent audit of the Elm Creek city funds.
Stephens remains free on bond. If convicted, she could face up to 20 years in prison.
