The community security organization SafeWise used crime statistics from the FBI to come up with their list of 10 safest cities in Nebraska.
Researchers there looked at cities with populations over 5,000 and looked at crimes included in the 2012 FBI Unified Crime Report that includes violent – murder, sexual assault, aggravated assault, robbery – and property crimes consisting of theft, burglary, motor vehicle theft, arson and larceny. SafeWire then crunched numbers on the chance of these crimes happening out of 1,000 individuals.
Nebraska’s average of violent crimes per 1,000 people is 2.59, about 30% less than the national average.
Three cities on the list, Wahoo, Cozad and O’Neill showed the least violent crime rates with less than one case per 1,000 people.
Other cities on Nebraska’s list include Auburn, Falls City, Aurora, Seward, Sidney, Blair and Gering.
