A lobbyist for the Conventions of States Project is at the Legislature today to attend a Government Committee meeting about LR35, introduced by Wilber State Senator Laura Ebke. Mark Meckler says they are working to change the U-S Constitution in order to stop high federal spending, return decision making power to individual states and to put term limits on federal officials.
Meckler says the Constitution gives states the power to call a convention to and propose amendments, however this is not an easy task. He says thirty-four states must agree to be part of the Convention of States just to start a conversation. If all agree, those proposed amendments are sent to all 50 states and three-quarters must agree.
Meckler says, “It has already been introduced in 30 states this year. That has never been done before in all of American history where 30 identical resolutions have been introduced around the country. That is extraordinary.”
Meckler says the Nebraska Legislature’s Government Committee will address LR35 this afternoon.
