Severe winter weather across the country has affected blood supplies.
American Red Cross, Nebraska – Southwest Iowa Regional spokesperson Katie Marshall says storms in March already forced the cancellation of more than 200 blood drives that resulted in nearly 7,000 uncollected blood and platelet donations.
Marshall says, “That is already on top of an already very tough February that we had. We canceled hundreds and hundreds of blood drives in February and that resulted in 26,000 pints of uncollected blood. Total between March and February about 35,000 pints have gone uncollected.”
Marshall says blood donated locally first goes to area hospitals but that leaves little to send to areas of the country that need it most. She says the Red Cross is an urgent need for donors to help restock shelves.
