Illegal pet shop raided in Omaha; 500 creatures recovered

April 9, 2015 By Karla James

As many as 500 birds, lizards, snakes, rats and mice were found in a pet shop being illegally operated out of a home in west Omaha this morning.

Nebraska Humane Society’s Mark Langan says a number of animals were found inside the house and they are in good health. However, upwards of 300 mice were found in a garage.

Langan says,” Two to three hundred mice were being confiscated from the garage after the ammonia levels were three times the legal limit and our veterinarian noticed they were seizing and having some chronic conditions associated with that.”

Langan says the owner was cited for operating an illegal pet shop. He say when the case goes to court the judge will make a decision as to what to do with the animals remaining in the home.
