A construction milestone reached on Monday on the University of Nebraska – Omaha campus. The first of 7,500 seats was installed inside the new UNO – Community Arena at 64th and Center Street.
Chancellor John Christensen says installing the first chair is worth celebrating. He says, “I think it symbolizes all the work that has been done by the university and the community to get to this point to actually realize that on October 23rd we are actually going to be participating in an activity in this building.”
That first activity is a UNO Maverick Hockey game but Chancellor Christensen says the facility is much more than a sports center. He says along with athletics it will also support the campus with student life and academic experiences and graduation. He says it will also support the community by offering public ice skating, high school graduation ceremonies and entertainment. Christensen says, “This is exactly what we hoped it would be.”
The new arena came with an estimated price tag of $82-million.
