Medical, physician assistant and physical therapy students at the University of Nebraska Medical Center will host a memorial service on Friday for those who’ve donated their bodies to science.
Dr. Kim Latacha, assistant professor of Genetic Cell Biology and Anatomy at UNMC says, “It is absolutely vital to their medical educations. Having the donors there for students to peruse imparts on them so much more than a textbook ever could because we are as different on the inside as the outside. Everyone’s organs look a little bit different. There is a lot of variability where our arteries and veins are running and it is important for the students to understand the complexity.”
Dr. Latacha says students often honor their donors with poems, music and readings at the service. It is truly a way they can show recognition to the donor and their family who honored their wishes.
Students will honor 104 donors this year. The event will be held on the UNMC campus.
