This is a great time for turkey hunters. Nebraska Game and Parks Commission spokesman Greg Wagner says we are entering what he calls the “magic window”.
He says the last week in April and the first week of May is the best spring turkey hunting of all.
Wagner says, “Hens are just starting to nest and they don’t want anything to do with those gobblers or jakes.” He says the toms will be a bit “love struck” and more likely to respond to a female turkey call.
Wagner says Nebraska comes in about 12th or 13th for the amount of turkeys harvested in non-woodland states. He says there are turkeys in all 93 Nebraska counties and there are several varieties.
Spring turkey youth archery and regular archery season runs through May 31st. Youth Shotgun and regular shotgun season also runs through the 31st.
Wagner says remember to get your permits and if you are hunting on private land ask the farmer first.
