Grab your walking shows before leaving home because it is the 9th annual National Walk at Lunch Day.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska Community Relations Specialist Tara Friesen says they are adding a bit of an incentive to get people moving. She says first log on to “nebraskablue.com/walk” and sign their pledge to promise to walk for at least 30 minutes today.
Friesen says, “For every individual that signs up we donate a dollar and for every group $20 to Nebraska Game and Parks Foundation and to Special Olympics Nebraska.”
Friesen says they also hope that Nebraskans will use National Walk at Lunch Day to kick start a healthier and more active lifestyle. Statistics show that walking 30 minutes a day can prevent or manage conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. Walking also strengthens bones, lifts your mood and helps to maintain a healthy weight.
The cost to treat illness and chronic disease caused by inactive lifestyles is nearly $1,000 for every family in America.
