Creighton improved to 31-17 with the win while Seton Hall dropped to 24-24. The Bluejays will face top-seeded St. John’s at 7 p.m. CT Friday night on day two of the BIG EAST Baseball Championship.
After junior Matt Warren retired the Pirates in order to begin the game, Creighton scored in their first at-bat. Sophomore Nicky Lopez reached on a hit by pitch with one down, then the Bluejays put together a two-out rally as junior Brett Murray singled to right to put runners on the corners before an RBI double off the bat of junior Ryan Fitzgerald gave Creighton a 1-0 lead.
Creighton added a run in the bottom of the fourth frame. Junior Matt Gandy drew a walk with one down, stole second and went to third when senior Landon Lucansky reached on a two base error by Seton Hall. Senior Kevin Lamb made the Pirates pay by lofting a long foul fly down the right field line, allowing Gandy to beat the tag attempt at home to put Creighton up 2-0 after four.
An error in the CU outfield led to two Seton Hall runs in the top of the fifth to knot the score at 2-2, then the Pirates scored two more runs grab a 4-2 lead with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. SHU notched an RBI single up the middle and an RBI double that found its way into the right field corner to build the lead.
Down to their final three frames Creighton wasted little time with a response. The Bluejays plated four runs in their half of the seventh on a hit batter, three walks, a two-run double and a sac fly.
After taking strike, Lamb took two balls then was hit by a pitch. Seton Hall went on to issue back-to-back four-pitch walks to load the bases. The Pirate pitching staff went on to throw 12 pitches out of the zone, before getting a strike against junior Reagan Fowler. The Bluejay first baseman went on to work a full count walk to force in a run and make it a 4-3 game. One out later Fitzgerald drove hit second RBI double of the game over the head of the SHU right fielder to drive in two runs and give CU a 5-4 advantage. A sacrifice fly by Harrison Crawford plated another run to put the Bluejays out front 6-4.
Lamb started another Creighton scoring rally in the bottom of the eighth with a leadoff single to right field. A two-out RBI triple by Lopez scored Lamb to make it 7-4 Creighton.
On the mound Creighton starter Matt Warren went six-plus innings and surrendered three runs including just one earned score. His six strikeouts matched a career high set in the Jays’ last BIG EAST series against Villanova. Reliever Ethan DeCaster earned the win with 1.1 of hitless relief to improve to 3-2 on the year and David Gerber closed out the win with a scoreless ninth to earn his ninth save of 2015.
Fitzgerald led the Creighton offense with a pair of RBI doubles that drove in three runs, while Lopez also had two hits for the Bluejays including an RBI triple.
Creighton will be back in action on Friday when the Bluejays play the night game on the second day of the BIG EAST Tournament against No. 1 seed St. John’s at 7 p.m. CT. The Red Storm defeated Georgetown, 2-1, in the first game of the BIG EAST Baseball Championship.
Seton Hall will face Georgetown in an elimination game on Friday, May 22 at 3:30 pm.
