A wild elk wandering around South Bend is being watched closely.
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission reports it is monitoring movement of the elk due to concerns about public safety. The elk has been spotted close to Interstate 80 and other major highways in the area.
Game and Parks says the elk is not part of the herd at Wildlife Safari Park, which is located south of I-80 across from Eugene T. Mahoney State Park.
If the elk remains in the area, Game and Parks says it will consider taking action, especially if its presence threatens either the safety of the public or of the captive herd.
Motorists should always be on the lookout for wildlife, according to Game and Parks.
