As kids start to enjoy their summer vacation there are 146-thousand in Nebraska wishing they were back in school. These are the children that received free or reduced school lunches and now they may not know where their next meal comes from.
Food Bank for the Heartland is the largest food bank in Nebraska and serves 93 counties in a two-state region. Spokesperson Brian Barks says you see a lot of collection barrels during the holiday months but this is a bad time of year for donations.
Barks says they are once again teaming with the Omaha Salvation Army for the summer Kids Crusin’ Kitchen program that delivers hot meals at no charge to 15 locations in a three county area.
For those outside the metro they are holding 20 rural mobile pantries throughout the state during the month of June. Some of the counties include Boone, Stanton, Antelope, Holt, Chreey, Dodge, Cuming, Colfax and Hall Counties.
