The Socialist Workers Party is speaking about regarding repeal of the death penalty in Nebraska. Member Dennis Richter ran for Nebraska governor in 2014 and says all working people should fight to abolish the death penalty to end this instrument of class rule in all 50 states.
Richter says, “In the United States there are classes. There is a very large working class. There is a very small class that rules, as a dictatorship of capital that is the society we live under. That is why a question like the death penalty, justice for all, and due process for all is so important because I believe there is not due process for working people.”
Richter says the entire justice system is aimed against working people. Prosecutors, the state, the grand jury system, public defenders and the police are all part of the wealthy class system. He says the death penalty is part of the class system and used by billionaire owners of capital and their parties to terrorize workers.
He goes on to say that the U-S has the highest incarceration rate of any country in the world and most fall into the working class category. He says these people are pressured by lawyers and courts to make a plea deal or face longer sentences and possibly the death penalty because they do not have the money for a good defense team. Meanwhile the state or courts have all the money and resources available to make a conviction.
