ebraska football great Johnny “The Jet” Rodgers is being honored by his hometown of Omaha. The city council Tuesday voted to rename Burt Street between 30th and 33rd in honor of the University of Nebraska’s first Heisman Trophy winner and for his hard work as a community leader.
Rodgers says, “I’ve only known about it myself for a couple of days. They told me they wanted it to be a surprise and it certainly was a surprise so I haven’t really taken it in. They set up to do a ribbon cutting on July 30th and it will probably kick in by then.”
When Rodgers was a student at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, he robbed a gas station in 1970. He petitioned the state for a pardon and that was granted in 2013. Rodgers says he has always been a good guy but made some mistakes and did some stupid things. He says he became much more responsible with age and is very pleased to give back to the community. He is a big supporter of youth sports and leadership programs and active in Dr. Tom Osborne’s Teammates Mentoring Program.
