A Nebraska man who jumped into the Missouri River to save four children got swept away in the current and drowned.
The children survived.
31-year-old Elias Salvador of Omaha couldn’t hang onto a tree branch and the rushing water of the rain-swollen Missouri overcame him.
Divers recovered the body of Salvador Sunday evening, about five hours after the children fell into the Missouri River at N.P. Dodge Park on the northern edge of Omaha. Relatives report the children waded into shallow water on the Missouri when the sand gave way and knocked them off their feet. Salvador jumped in, followed quickly by other relatives. Nearby fishermen also responded.
Two of the children were Salvador’s daughters.
No one else was hurt.
