It was a deadly weekend on Omaha metro area roads this weekend. The first was a three vehicle accident that killed motorcyclist, 54 year old Gregory Balcom of Council Bluffs around 11 am Sunday. Omaha Police Sgt. Jason Menning says witnesses reported a Dodge Avenger was speeding on northbound 13th near Y Street when it struck the back of Balcom’s motorcycle. His motorcycle was then pushed into the back of another vehicle. The Avenger then crossed into the opposite lane at Z Street, struck a pole and then hit a retaining wall.
Balcom was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Avenger, 55 year old Timothy Harden of Bellevue was taken to an Omaha hospital with critical injuries that include a fractured back, but is expected to survive. There were two people in the third vehicle involved and neither was hurt.
Investigators say a medical condition may have caused the accident.
Omaha police are also investigating a deadly head-on accident Sunday evening along West Dodge Road. Police report a driver cross the median into oncoming traffic and struck another vehicle. That driver that lost control was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Authorities have not released their names and the investigation continues.
