A 22-year-old man has been arrested in the shocking mugging of an elderly woman at St. Cecilia Cathedral Sunday morning.
Wayman Clark has been arrested. Another man is being sought.
Members of the Omaha Police Department’s Gang Unit viewed the video of the robbery at St. Cecilia Cathedral and believed they recognized one of the suspects.
Also, Omaha Crime Stoppers received several tips regarding the incident, which also pointed to Clark as a suspect.
A felony warrant was issued for his arrest. Clark was taken into custody Wednesday. The search for the second suspect continues.
The 76-year-old woman from Iowa was taken to Creighton University Medical Center with a large bump on her forehead as well as various scrapes, according to a report filed with the Omaha Police Department. A surveillance video from St. Cecilia shows the woman walking in to the north vestibule. She stopped at the welcome table to look at a newsletter when two men rush into the cathedral. One grabs her purse and flees. The other begins to leave, hesitates, then turns on the woman and slugs her, knocking her to the ground.
Father Ryan Lewis is pastor at St. Thomas More in Omaha and says like the rest of the community he is outraged.
“It is awful. It is horrific. I just feel awful for this lady who was praying in church and was attacked. I hope the two are brought to justice and there is a jail in their future,” Father Lewis says.
Father Lewis says he is thankful that St. Cecilia’s had such a good video surveillance system, which could help lead to the convictions of the men involved. He says parishioner safety is a big concern and that will become more of an issue in the weeks ahead.
