Folk singer and Kearney native Jim Salestrom is returning to his hometown this weekend for a couple of concerts and his high school reunion.
The 59-year-old Salestrom now lives in Denver, Colorado, and started playing guitar and singing at age seven. At 15, he formed a band called Timberline with his brother which met with short-term success after recording their first album.
“We were the opening act for Dolly Parton for five or six months and when Timberline broke up, she called and asked if I’d like to audition for her band,” Salestrom says. “So, I’ve been with her, off and on, since 1979.”
Salestrom says he’s looking forward to returning home with the opportunity to perform in front of family and friends.
“It’s going to be fun because it’s also the alumni weekend for all of the people that went to Kearney High School,” he says. “We wanted to invite everybody to bring their iPhone or their smartphone or their iPad, and we want them to record as much of it as they possibly can because we’re going to use that if we put a DVD together.”
After an opening show last night, Salestrom performs tonight at 7 o’clock and again on Saturday at 3 PM. All shows are at the historic World Theatre in Kearney. His son, James Junior, is also a folk musician and he’ll be the opening act.
