Nebraska will be looking for more production out of the defensive line when the Huskers host Southern Mississippi on Saturday. Preseason All-American tackle Maliek Collins has registered only seven tackles in the first three games of the season.
“We’re trying to do some things with Maliek to put him in some more one on one situations rather than getting double teamed”, said Husker defensive coordinator Mark Banker. “It has to improve but it is not why we are losing games.”
Banker says while the Huskers have been stout against the run some execution and alignment issues have led to big plays.
Collins says the Huskers competition early in the season is also a factor.
“It’s really just a humbling experience when you go against good teams”, said Collins. “Obviously we thought we were pretty good but really you go back to the drawing board and fix things we messed up on because we did mess up a lot in that game.”
