Witnesses report the man ran across the lawn of the Capitol early Tuesday afternoon. Some say he was carrying a gun. An unmarked police car stopped in the middle of 14th Street.
Officers yelled at the man, then fired four to five shots.
The man was shot and wounded. He fell on the lawn of the Nebraska State Education Association, which is located on 14th Street, west of the Capitol.
He’s identified as 18-year-old Tareik Artis, of Lincoln. Witnesses say he was shot in the thighs and fled following a traffic stop.
Lincoln police have confirmed officers fired the shots after a man fled from a traffic stop at 10th and G Streets, near the Capitol.
The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office joined in the pursuit.
The deputy sheriff who fired one of the shots has been placed on administrative leave.
