Officers say 18-year-old Teriek Artis of Lincoln jumped out of the backseat of a car during a traffic stop and pointed a loaded gun at an officer.
Artis was shot at least once and transported to a local hospital where he’s expected to recover. He was listed in critical but stable condition.
Authorities say the gun Artis was carrying was loaded, had a round in the chamber and the teen had two additional magazines loaded with with a total of 22 rounds of ammunition. Police also say Artis was carrying multiple packages of illegal drugs, but they didn’t clarify what kind of narcotics.
Lincoln Police Chief Jim Peschong says witnesses saw the suspect point the gun at officers before they fired.
“This was a tragic event and by the grace of God, no one lost their life as a result of this,” Chief Peschong says. “These events highlight the dangers that men and women in law enforcement in our community are facing every day.”
Lincoln detectives are still investigating the shooting. A sheriff’s deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
