A two-year, $200 million dollar fundraising initiative will be undertaken to help future and current students at the University of Nebraska.
University of Nebraska President Hank Bounds says he personally understands the struggles students go through to pay for college.
“I grew up never thinking I would ever have the opportunity to go to college. I grew up in a fairly humble background. I struggled to pay for college. I did it on my own and it’s through that lens that I see the work that I do every day,” Bounds tells Nebraska Radio Network affiliate KLIN.
The initiative is called “Our Students, Our Future.”
Through the initiative, the University of Nebraska and NU Foundation will provide direct support for university students through need-and merit based scholarships for all four of the Nebraska campuses.
Bounds says his struggles to pay for college helps him understand the financial pressures facing college students.
“And so, I want to do everything that I can personally and as president of this university to insure that every student has the opportunity to get a degree,” Bounds says. “It transformed my life and I want to give our students that same transformative opportunity.”
