County officials gather in Kearney on Thursday for the annual Nebraska Association of County Officials legislative conference.
Association Executive Director Larry Dix says a big topic among the counties is making the transition to a new 9-1-1 emergency calling system.
“Try to get it pushed across, because we think it’s important for really all the citizens in the state and that is what we call NextGen 9-1-1. It’s the next generation of when people call 9-1-1,” Dix tells Nebraska Radio Network affiliate WNAX
The NextGen system will track and locate calls and texts from cell phones.
Dix says counties want to provide the best 9-1-1 emergency calling system they can.
“We have to take a look at what is the cost of the equipment and is it the best policy for the state of Nebraska to have a 9-1-1 center in all the counties,” according to Dix.
Other big topics, according to Dix, are unfunded mandates handed down by the state and how best to fund highway and bridge improvements.
