Nebraska Association of County Officials Executive Director Larry Dix says upgrading emergency 9-1-1 calling systems is high on the list of priorities. NextGen 9-1-1 can track and locate cell phone calls. The transition to NextGen 9-1-1, though, can be costly. Dix says counties are discussing how best to pay for the upgrade with some considering joint emergency center operations to share costs.
County officials want a change in state law to help manage road and bridge construction.
Nebraska Association of County Officials Executive Director Larry Dix says counties will lobby the legislature this year to loosen restrictions on when road construction money can be spent.
“We had some issues where just through the timing of repairs of roads, there’s a statute that says until the budget is adopted you can only really spend one-twelfth of the money in any month. And, of course, that doesn’t line up with the road-building process,” Dix tells Nebraska Radio Network affiliate KXPN.
Dix notes the budget year starts in July, the thick of the road construction season.
Dix says the annual conference allows the association to speak directly with county officials to set the legislative agenda for the session that begins in January. He says it also gives the association time to speak with state senators about sponsoring its legislation.
