It is a big day for the University of Nebraska – Omaha Associate Athletic Director Mike Kemp. He was the first coach of the Maverick Hockey Team when they played their first game at the Civic Auditorium.
Kemp says, “The Civic was a great facility for us but it wasn’t on our campus. We spend eighteen years – plus driving fans to other areas of town and not to our campus. I think it was very important from a university perspective, not just an athletic perspective, to bring people to our campus.”
Tonight that dream becomes a reality when the UNO Mavericks christen their new home, Baxter Arena. Kemp says, “With great pride and great joy at seeing this finally come together. When we started this program back in 1996, our dream was to have an on-campus facility that we could practice at 365 days a year and have a facility that we could call our own.”
The number one ranked Mavericks take on the Air Force tonight. The puck drops at 7:30.
