A South Dakota midwife will not be charged with manslaughter in the death of a newborn in rural Nebraska in 2011.
Sixty-eight-year-old Judy Jones of Irene, South Dakota had also been charged with practicing without a license when she helped deliver a baby in Custer County in September of 2011. The infant died shortly after birth.
Prosecutors say they dropped the charges after those involved declined to proceed with the case. Jones had been prohibited from practicing midwifery in both Nebraska and South Dakota. Prosecutors say charged could be re-filed if the parties involved change their minds.
