The Nebraska Humane society is calling this act one of the worst cases of animal cruelty in recent years. Vice President of Field Operations Mark Langan says Humane Society investigators were called to a west Omaha home Monday to assist Douglas County Sheriff’s Office with an investigation. He says they found an 8 year old German Shepherd mix inside a white garbage bag on the deck.
Langan says, “There is information that the dog may have bit the person before the encounter occurred. The necropsy shows multiple stab wounds to the dog, along with blunt force trauma to the head. The dog ultimately died of blood loss.”
Langan says there is evidence the dog tried to run and hide from the attacker but was not successful. There is evidence on several floors of the home at 144th and Fort Streets.
33 year old Nathan Mayer was placed under arrest and is charged with felony animal cruelty. Currently no bond is set. If convicted, Mayer faces a maximum of five years in prison or a $10,000 fine.
