The Better Business Bureau of Nebraska, Southwest Iowa, South Dakota and Kansas Great Plains is getting a lot of calls about an old scam with a new twist. President Jim Hegarty says scammers claim to be from an organization called Team Viewer that is associated with Microsoft.
Hegarty says, “They detected malware coming from your computer. They need to log on remotely so you give them access to your system so they can analyze the situation. People will give them this access and that is mistake number one.”
Hegarty says the scammers then say they have identified the problem and it will be about $399 to clean it up. Of course, they accept all major credit cards. He says not only have you given them access to your system where they can tamper and steal information but you gave them a valid credit card. He says most often unauthorized charges start showing up immediately.
Hegarty says if you get one of these calls the BBB wants to hear about it. He says you can log on to bbb.org to report the scam or call one of their operators. He says they have first responders ready to help sort the issue out.
