A former Elm Creek village clerk will serve time in prison for stealing money from the village.
Fifty-year-old Wendy Stephens has been sentenced in Buffalo County District Court to 20 months to five years in prison for felony attempted theft by deception of more than $1,500 after being convicted of stealing $131,000 from the village.
An investigation revealed Stephens embezzled money from the village 60 times since 2010.
The investigation further revealed that Stephens altered or wrote numerous checks to herself or for her own benefit to pay her personal expenses.
Stephens confessed to the crime after an audit of village funds revealed a notable cash shortage in the total fund balance.
In addition to her prison sentence, Stephens was further ordered to pay the village restitution.
The village of Elm Creek has also filed a civil lawsuit against Stephens. That case is pending.
