A number of Nebraska State Patrol troopers were on special detail today. Instead of patrolling the state’s roads they were walking the halls at Children’s Hospital and Medical Center in Omaha spreading Christmas cheer. For more than 25 years, the State Troopers Association of Nebraska has raised money to buy teddy bear gifts for hospitalized children throughout the state.
Trooper James Estwick says, “There are a lot of sick kids here and if we can give them a little joy by giving them a teddy bear, it helps us out and helps them out. We really enjoy doing this. We do a lot of “fist pumping” and “high-fives” and the kids are really excited about it.
Trooper Estwick says it is a tough time of year to be sick and children are missing many opportunities at school and at home to celebrate the holidays. In addition to the teddy bear program, the Association also helps Children’s grant special wishes to patents year-round through the Wishing Well Foundation.
