A man has been killed and a deputy seriously injured in a shootout in western Nebraska.
The Nebraska State Patrol reports 66-year-old Neil Stretesky of Big Springs was shot and killed during an altercation with Deuel County Sheriff’s deputies who were attempting to serve arrest warrants out of Sedgwick, CO and Keith County, NE.
52-year-old Michael Hutchinson of Chappell, a 25-year law enforcement veteran, was shot and wounded.
According to NSP, the deputies were attempting to serve the arrest warrants at 405 W. Cedar Street in Big Springs shortly after noon. Stretesky resisted arrest. Shots were fired.
Both men were taken to Ogallala Community Hospital, where Stretesky was pronounced dead. Hutchinson underwent surgery in Ogallala before being flown by medical helicopter in serious condition to North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, Colorado.
The investigation into the shooting continues.
A grand jury will be convened in accordance with state law.
