The Nebraska State Patrol says the accident occurred shortly after 2:30 a.m. when an eastbound semi-trailer attempted to enter a rest area exit but, was unable to make it and merged at a slow speed back into the traffic lane where it was rear-ended by a straight truck.
The driver of the straight truck, 25-year-old Adrian Carrillo, and a passenger, 48-year-old Roberto Garcia-Gonzales, both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa died in the collision.
The driver of the semi, 34-year-old Al-Jabba Hopkins of Wendell, North Carolina was not injured.
A passenger aboard the semi sustained minor injuries.
