Nebraska’s largest school district is looking at updating their Human Growth, Development and Sexual Education course and that is leaving many parents and concerned citizens up in arms. Dave Meyer is with savenebraskachildren.com and the group has met Omaha Public School administrators about the new curriculum.
He says many students attended a conference sponsored by the North Omaha Community Care Council at the University of Nebraska – Omaha last October that has him concerned. Meyer says, “They reserved it as a teen empowerment conference, which would lead you to that it would be leadership driven. The on-line invitation didn’t give much of a description but the bottom line was a get real and talk about sex event. One of the students that came for it actually said he thought of it as a sex concentration camp and he actually saw things he can’t un-see.”
Meyer says they had a variety of different displays, presentations and demonstrations. They had a demonstration on how to put a condom on a banana. He says they actually had co-ed relay races with condoms and showed a date rape video. He says those attending were also given a bag that contained some important information but other items, including condoms, that could be considered inappropriate.
Meyer is asking parents to get involved and voice their opinion about the new curriculum. He says O-P-S is holding a community forum on January 4th and the Board of Education plans to make a decision on the changes on January 20th.
