A 65-year-old Omaha pilot died when his light plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Eppley Airfield Thursday morning.
John Rogers died in the crash, just across the Missouri River, north of Council Bluffs, Iowa in the median of Interstate 29.
Rogers knew he was in trouble immediately. He called back to Eppley, requesting an emergency landing. Authorities rushed to the crash scene, but Rogers was dead.
The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office reports the plane brought down power lines as it descended, cutting power to more than 12-hundred customers. The plane crashed nose first and came to rest on its top. Authorities closed portions of I-29 as emergency crews responded.
