A brand new ice hockey center will open in Lincoln, giving the University of Nebraska more opportunity than before for its recreational use and club hockey teams.

Breslow Ice Hockey Center manager Glen Danischewski says the center has a wide range of use.

“It was built for everyone,” Danischewski tells reporters during a tour of the facility. “It was built for community use; built for university use. But, most of all, built as an ice hockey center and skating center so everybody could utilize it.”

The Breslow Ice Hockey Center covers 53,000 square feet. It features a National Hockey League-size ice rink with seating for about 700 spectators. It is located between Haymarket Park and the Pinnacle Bank Arena.

UNL will use the new rink for ice-related sport clubs, intramural sports leagues and activities as well as club hockey.

“Campus recreation, which will be intramural such as broom ball hockey. They’ll do some skating events. They have some private, public late night public skates when the general public wouldn’t use it,” according to Danischewski. “They’ll use it for their club hockey, both men’s and women’s.”

Former state Auditor and businessman John Breslow donated $7 million toward construction of the arena.
