The USS Omaha is an Independence-variant littoral combat ship, or LCS. It’s 418 feet long with a crew of about 75.
The ship is designed to be very fast and maneuverable with non-traditional lines, helping it to evade radar.
Warren Buffett’s daughter, Susie, an Omaha philanthropist, will give the traditional order to: “Man our ship and bring her to life!”
This is the 4th time a U-S Navy ship has been named after Nebraska’s largest city. The first Omaha set sail in 1872. The second was a light cruiser that served with distinction in World War Two. The most recent Omaha was an attack submarine, decommissioned in 1995.
